Supporting arguments
- In the United States, prior to the institution of laws enforcing requirements for a safe working environment, callous and abusive businesses created unsafe working environments, resulting in tragedies like the Triangle Shirtwaist Fire. State regulations are effective at preventing events like these. [1]
- Opponents do not accept the premise that consumer pressure is an effective way to regulate the harmful practices of private institutions.
Opposing arguments
- Employers that create unsafe working conditions can be charged with crimes under ordinary criminal law, and if guilty, convicted. The fear of criminal charges is sufficient to prevent abusive working conditions. [2]
