| Only the Catholic Church continues to possess a valid claim of apostolic succession today

- Note: The Porvoo Communion includes the following Lutheran Churches: Evangelical Lutheran Church of Iceland, Church of Norway, Church of Sweden, Evangelical Lutheran Church of Finland, Estonian Evangelical Lutheran Church, Evangelical Lutheran Church of Lithuania and the Church of Denmark.
- Note: The Porvoo Communion includes the following Anglican Churches: Church of Ireland, Scottish Episcopal Church, Church of England, the Church in Wales, the Lusitanian Catholic Apostolic Evangelical Church, and the Spanish Reformed Episcopal Church.
Supporting arguments
All of the Porvoo Communion churches developed historically out of Christian traditions that stretch back to the apostles. Though the chain of bishop ordination has not been maintained in every signatory (namely the Church of Denmark), that fact alone does not disqualify the communion from claiming the spirit of apostolic succession. [1]
Opposing arguments
The Eastern Orthodox Church does not recognize any claims of apostolic validity to churches outside of the Orthodox tradition. [2]

Apostolic succession has had practical value in resolving disputes in church history, but it is not an inherent part of Christianity. Formal legalistic ordination in the modern sense didn't exist in the apostles' times. [3]
- Related argument: Apostolic succession is a valid source of spiritual authority.
The Church of Denmark, which signed the Communion in 2010, was founded by a pastor, Johannes Bugenhagen, not a bishop. Therefore, the Church of Denmark does not have a valud claim of apostolic succession. [4]
