Supporting arguments
- Birth control pills make the womb inhospitable for fertilized eggs. Fertilized eggs, being past the point of conception, constitute people, so by making her womb inhospitable for the fertilized eggs, the woman is thereby causing an abortion. [1]
- Opponents do not accept the premise that personhood begins at conception.
Opposing arguments
- The most commonly used birth control pills, containing both progestogen and estrogen, prevent ovulation and conception from ever occurring, and thus can not be considered an abortifacient. [2]
- The "rhythm method", in which women engage in sexual intercourse at times least conducive to pregnancy, results in a higher rate of abortion that birth control pills. This is because the rhythm method does not necessarily prevent conception and only prevents pregnancy by making the embryo unable to attach to the uterine wall. Since very few people consider the rhythm method an immoral abortifacient, it is unreasonable to consider birth control pills an abortifacient. [3] [4]
- Opponents do not accept the premise that the rhythm method causes abortions.
