Supporting arguments

When polygamous relationships are described in the Bible, it is clear that they lead to chaos and decay. This is evidence that they should be condemned because they are immoral. [1]

The Bible depicts marriage as a holy and sacred bond between one man and one woman. Anything else is thus contrary to biblical principles. [2] [3]

Ephesians 5:22-32 contains instruction from God on how to manage relationships between a husband and a wife. If God had meant to allow for marriages with other forms, it would be mentioned here. [4] [5]

The Book of Ephesians 6:3 instructions people to honor their "mother and father", which is not possible for people raised by same-sex couples. This establishes that marriage between these couples is wrong. [6]

1 Corinthians 7:2-4 instructs men to wed and give their wives affection. It is specified here that sexual desires should only be fulfilled within a marriage, and that spouses must be of the opposite gender. [7]

Opposing arguments

The story of David and Jonathan, from the Book of Samuel, is about a homosexual couple in a committed relationship. In this story, David, as was typical of the time, was also married to several women. David and Jonathan are celebrated in the Bible, not condemned. [8]

There are very few references to this sort of marriage in The Bible. Abraham, Jacob, David and Solomon all practiced polygamy. Monogamy did not become established in Christendom until the 6th Century. [9]

In the New Testament, Jesus Christ makes no reference to homosexuality, so we should not presume that homosexual relationships were condemned at that time, nor that they didn't exist. [10]

The Bible portrays positively Moses and Queen Esther, both of whom defy their respective society's bans on marrying foreigners and non-Jews respectively. This shows that the author(s) of the The Bible did not intend a doctrinaire understanding of the nature of marriage. [11]

The Bible describes many polygamous relationships without giving any hint of a reason to think they are wrong. It is therefore unreasonable to think the Bible is opposed to polygamous marriages. [12]
