The purpose of a hypothesis (such as a prediction about economic events) is to prove or disprove a conclusion, not one of the assumptions used in formulating the hypothesis. What is important is whether the predictions are true or not. [1]
There are actual economic theories that use provably false assumptions but are still successful at predicting and explaining market events, such as the Capital Asset Pricing Model. This is because the assumptions are minor in effect. [2]
