Supporting arguments

The more difficult it is for men to release their sexual energy, such as through legal prostitution, the more likely they are to commit serious crimes like rape and child molestation. [1]

By removing the legal penalties for victims of trafficking, legalized prostitution makes such laws easier to enforce. [2]

Without labor laws and other government regulations protecting workers, prostitutes are at risk for being victimized and harassed. [3]

Legalized prostitution would reduce the hold men have over women in the industry, giving women more independence and control over their lives. This would make men and women more equal. [4]

Prohibited prostitution results in an increase in sexually transmitted diseases. [5]

With governmental tolerance, "red light" districts, or neighborhoods where prostitution is common, can be more easily regulated and managed in a safe manner. [6]

Opposing arguments

Prostitution is harmful in capitalist societies because the exploitative nature of capitalism causes the harmful effects to appear. [7]

The harm caused by prostitution arises from its inherent immorality. Legalizing it does not change that. [8]

Even in places where prostitutes can choose to work legally, many of them choose not to, and prefer to engage in riskier behavior. Therefore, much of prostitution's harm is caused by factors other than its illegality. [9]
