Linking arguments
Governments should recognize both opposite and same sex marriages

Supporting arguments

Marriage is a part of human life, and being allowed to partake in it is essential in order for homosexual individuals to be equal and full partners in society. [1]

Marriage is a right given by governments to opposite-sex partnerships. Not granting it to same-sex couples as well constitutes discrimination. [2]

Opposing arguments

There is no right to marriage. [3]

If the institution of marriage is extended to same-sex partnerships, there will be no logical reason not to extend it even further, even to encompass clearly immoral relationships, such as those involving incest. [4]

This point applies only in the United States.
If marriage is a human right that applies to all people and must be protected by governmental agencies in the United States, rather than a societal institution focused on familial development and procreation, then precedent such as Loving v. Virginia and Goodridge v. Department of Public Health will force courts to further extended marriage rights to incestuous couples, which is an immoral outcome. [5]
